Thailand’s tourism industry is set for sustainable growth according to the World Travel and Tourism Council, which last week said that Thailand would have the world’s tenth fastest growing tourism sector over the coming decade with an average annual growth rate of 6.7 percent.
One week after seizing over 400 pounds of smuggled African elephant tusks at Bangkok’s international airport, Thai Customs officials confiscated over 100 pounds of African rhino horns. Meanwhile, conservationists announced that the Kingdom’s wild elephant population had increased by about 10 percent in recent years.

Nai Han Beach, Kata Noi Beach, and Freedom Beach at Patong, Phuket were listed as 4th , 8th and 11th , while Phra Nang Cave Beach and Railay Beach in Krabi took 7th and 14th place, respectively in the list of Top 25 Beaches – Asia. The TripAdvisor 2017 Travelers’ Choice beaches are determined based on the quantity and quality of travelers’ reviews and ratings on the TripAdvisor website gathered over a 12-month period.

Foreign investors will be able to hold the majority of shares in aviation-related businesses in the new cutting-edge Eastern Economic Corridor development zone according to the government, which is seeking a royal decree on the matter, as it also planned income tax cuts for businesses that invest and locate in the new zone.
The move on shareholding is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Transport, which is seeking to replace the 1954 Civil Aviation Act with a new bill that would help to further liberalize the sector. Currently, foreign investors are allowed to hold a maximum of 49 percent of shares in aviation-related businesses such as aircraft parts manufacturing and aircraft maintenance.
A total of 31 villages in four provinces have signed on to a program to apply the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej as a means to improving livelihoods, the environment and developing sustainable solutions to the challenges they face. The villages are in the northeastern province of Khon Kaen and the southern provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat.
The Sufficiency Economy Philosophy was developed by the late King Bhumibol through working directly with villagers over many decades to help lift them out of poverty and solve their problems. It is based on Buddhist principles of moderation, reasonableness and prudent decision-making. It calls for diversifying crops and sources of income and living in harmony with the environment.
Thailand became the first nation in the region to implement an electronic payment regime last week when it rolled out PromptPay, the long-awaited interbank mobile payment system for consumers that is an essential foundation for building a digital economy, with plans to expand the system to business-to-business transactions in March.
United States-based global investment heavyweight Goldman Sachs and Apollo Global Management of the U.S. are investing $236 million in Thailand’s Pace Development Corporation, the builder of Bangkok’s tallest skyscraper and a firm that has plans for other high-profile real estate developments in the near future, Pace’s CEO said last week.
