Thailand’s energy landscape is about to become more green and sustainable as a government research agency announced last week it has developed a way to make biofuel from cassava at a cost that is competitive in the market. The breakthrough production method could increase Thailand’s energy independence and benefit other nations seeking to increase alternative energy use.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha told ministers last week he is ready to use Section 44 of the interim charter that grants him broad powers – to speed up passage of several pieces of legislation designed to increase ease of doing business in the Kingdom and gain a higher ranking from the World Bank in its annual ease of doing business global rankings.

Former World Trade Organization Director-General Supachai Panitchpakdi praised the Thai government’s 20-year transformation strategy called Thailand 4.0 as “the right path” for the country, adding that national plans are necessary to guide countries towards equitable and sustainable development.

Following in her family’s tradition and commitment to public service, HRH Princess Bajarakitiyabha Mahidol was named a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador on the Rule of Law for Southeast Asia last week by the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, which noted her work on strengthening judicial systems and advocating for better treatment for women prisoners.

Mr. Pisan Manawapat, Ambassador of Thailand to the United States, Mr. Tanee Sangrat, Consul General of Thailand, Los Angeles, and representatives from the private sectors including those from World Trade Center in Los Angeles, NASA-Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Zodiac Aerospace, Oracle and AT&T joined the meeting.
